Cartagena Private Islands
For those seeking a true Caribbean escape, you can rent your own private island in the Rosario archipelago. With an array of thrilling island tours, you can explore the vibrant marine life, and relax on picturesque beaches.
This two-story private island has a capacity of 14 guests and offers stunning views. It features a deck, splash pool, lounge furniture and hammocks.
Isla Mucura
The little palm-tree covered island of Isla Mucura is surrounded by azure water and coral and is about as close to the Caribbean island cliche as it gets. This is an excellent spot for relaxing sunbathing, taking a long walk during the day exploring all that the island has to offer or after dark enjoying one of the most beautiful sunsets you’ll ever see.
Hop aboard a boat and tour the island of Isla Mucura on this full-day excursion from Cartagena. During the trip, explore the islands of the San Bernardo Archipelago and enjoy a traditional Caribbean lunch. The trip is ideal for those wanting to experience the Caribbean paradise they’ve been dreaming about.
Isla del Sol
This stunning island is more about slow, laid-back island life than ticking off tourist attractions. Having said that, it’s an incredible place to enjoy sunsets, serene country hikes and impressive lake views. Plus, a stay here gives you an insight into a fascinating way of life that is still very much alive and well in Bolivia.
Currently the north side of Isla del Sol is off limits due to ongoing community issues, but a few hours is plenty of time to explore the southern half and see the Sun Temple (although it’s possible you may have to trek across from Yumani or Copacabana). A number of tour companies offer half day excursions which include a short visit to the island.
Isla Baru
The secluded beaches of Isla Baru are great for those who want to relax and enjoy the sun, sea and sand without beach touts and trips. However, the water isn’t crystal clear and the sand can be a little rocky. Fortunately, the hotels have private access to their own beaches with beautiful sand and water.
There are a number of activities to choose from on Isla Baru, including snorkeling, diving, and boat tours. You can also take a horseback riding tour of the island and visit local markets and restaurants.
Isla Baru is located near the Rosario Islands, which are some of Cartagena’s best budget beaches. It is not as luxurious or exotic as some of the other private islands in the area, but it has a fun atmosphere and is a good place to spend a few days relaxing on the beach. There are also a few historical sites on the island, including the San Fernando Fort.
Isla San Bernardo
A day trip to the Archipelago of San Bernardo can be the perfect way to relax and enjoy the sun-kissed beaches. Though these islands are a bit further out than the Rosario Islands and don’t make it on many travelers’ lists, visitors who make the effort will find a beach paradise hidden from the gringo trail.
To get to Isla San Bernardo from Cartagena, book a boat tour that departs from the port between 8 and 10 am. The boat ride is about 2 hours and can be bumpy depending on the sea conditions.
There are several hotels on Isla Mucura, but I recommend staying at hotel Punta Faro. This hotel has a secluded area where you can lay back and listen to the sound of the waves. Guests can also try a variety of water sports on the island and swim with bioluminescent plankton if they want to be more active. The water on the island is warm and clear enough for swimming in December to April.
